Beaked Mussel

About

A medium-sized mussel with a rather elongate shell, in which one lateral margin is straight while the other is widest near its mid-point. The shell bears dense radial ribs, which may be obliterated by erosion on the older parts of the shell, but which should always be apparent towards its outer margin. Shell usually purplish-brown, but live animals are often coated in algae

Size

Shell length up to 50 mm

Habitat

Lives on the lower to middle shore, in sheltered settings, attached to rocks or to other mussels and usually half-buried in sediment.

Distribution

Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (TAS, VIC, SA and WA)
